Dot Lane Goes To The Movies

What Time Does This Movie Start Again?

Still Sick

I Don't Look Well...Pale, Black Lips, Oh No!

I've been feeling under the weather the past few days and I want to give a big thank you to all of my friends who have been looking after me. I decided to go to the Imperial College London Virtual Hospital to get a check up. Here I am waiting for the doctor. Although the doctor didn't show, this beautiful dress from Bossa Nova (the "Lucia" model) has proved to be the ideal prescription to boost my spirits and it is currently free, which makes it lot cheaper than modern day medical treatment.

The Lovely DJ Melanie Spins At Club Mysteria 4 Oct at 2 PM SLT

The Lovely DJ Melanie Spins at Club Mysteria

Now I know my loyal readers wonder where I am most of the time, but they should know that being a girl reporter takes a lot of wandering SL, talking with people, and poking my nose where I shouldn't. But I do know where I will be on Thursday October 4th at 2 PM SLT. I'll be at Club Mysteria where DJ Melanie plays the latest club and progressive beats and the elite meet to move their feet. The dress code on the 4th is "Clubwear" and I will have you know I won the Clubwear contest there a while ago so you'll have to dress your best because I will be dressed to the nines--I expect to see all you in your tens! I'd love to meet my blog readers there so mark your calendars! How do you find Club Mysteria? Teleport to Mysteria's entrance and look for the Club Mysteria sign and use the teleport which takes you to the club. It's fast, easy, and fun! And sorry boys, Mysteria is for women only....

Free Burma

Photo with Mini May outside of Punch Drunk. You can see the photo she took of us here.

The proprietess of Punch Drunk, Iris Seale, has created the "Peaceful Protest" shirt to show support for the thousands of people in Burma protesting against the military junta which has run that country for almost fifty years. While it is easy to dismiss the wearing of a shirt in SL as a meaningless gesture, Dot Lane firmly believes that we all create a collective consciousness and even a small act like wearing this shirt, if it prompts one person to talk to another person in RL about this travesty, can make a difference. Silence does no one any good.

Please come and get your shirt and show your support for freedom of thought and speech.

Table For One

"Mmmmm.....that's a good cup of coffee!"

With the number of photos of herself sitting alone at tables increasing, Dot Lane is feeling more and more like an Edward Hopper painting every day. Here I am eating breakfast at the Waffle Cabin in Selby.

Are You Pregnant? Part Four

Some random guy asked the question again, to which Dot Lane yells:

"What the hell is the matter with you people!"

Photo taken at The Bermuda Playground, Selby using the most excellent "argue" poseballs.

On the other hand, the guy who asked this question wasn't exactly a candidate for MENSA because he looked at the shirt below and asked:

"Are you with the Red Cross?"

Dot Lane sadly shakes her head at the state of the world.

Stripes You Say?

I didn't say it was all about dots...I said it is all about Dot! Here I am sitting outside in Koreshan Pointe wearing my favorite stripey shirt from Wrong. I just read the menu from EtchD and decided I wasn't hungry. While the Chicanery Cider sounds delicious, I will have to pass on Sprocket Mouse Pattie. On the other hand, they guarantee "semi-clean eating and at least sub-par customer service" so really, what's the worst thing that could happen?

Fly Me!

Another Fashion Consolidated find was Tesla, a shop which sells incredible photorealistic sculptie shoes and hats. It is hard not to like a shop which advertises "cute girl shoes" because, as you know, Dot Lane is all about the cute. I am currently saving my Linden to buy a pair (or ten) but picked up this free fun stewardess outfit on my way out the door.

See No Evil

I'm a member of the Fashion Consolidated group, which means I get notices daily from designers throughout SL. It is an excellent way to keep up with the latest in skins, shapes, clothes, accessories--all kinds of things. I have to admit that I don't always read the notices as carefully as I should but I was pleasantly surprised when a note from See No Evil came over the transom. Why? Because a freebie was attached, two shirts with, wait for it, dots! If you like your style out on the edge, be sure to give the store a visit. Photos taken at the Caledon Hedge Maze.

Hoist the Mainsail!

Sailing at Innisfree.

My charming friend AM took me sailing yesterday which is a wonderful way to pass the time. She's an expert sailor and kept us away from whales and orcas and other things which inhabit the Second Life seas. The only obstacle we encountered was running aground on a sim boundary which tends to sink ships. This surprised me since I always though it was loose lips which sunk ships.

Since she was young, Dot Lane has loved sailing and the sea, so much so in fact that she has had SL tattoos made to reflect this passion. Below you will see my fore and aft tattoos. The stars indicate port and starboard, and the photo was taken at the Port Caledon with the channel markers as a background. The multi-talented and dear friend BR created the anchor tattoo. You haven't been to Caledon? If you're a fan of Victoriana or steam punk you will want to go there post haste and you will even see the Loch Ness Monster at Port Caledon. As always, click on the photos for larger versions.

Avoid Her Like The Plague? No Way!

Dot Lane loves her stylish friends who are far more daring than herself, friends who explore the far reaches of SL fashion, look like a million Linden, and introduce her to stores she would never ever find on her own. Chartreuse Muni, editrix of the blog The Excellent Second Life of Chartreuse Muni, has caught the plague. What's that you say? The plague? Well, yes, and she looks stunning as always. Check her out!

Watch That First Step.....

Skydiving in Second Life

A Woman's Touch 2 has a skydiving pod which is a blast.

There other places to skydive in SL so just do a search. If you're ever in Paris 1900, you can jump off the Eiffel Tower. Me being me, I fell off without a parachute. What have you fallen off of in Second Life? Leave a comment and let me know!

Accessories to the Fashion Crime

People ask a lot of questions about the things I wear, most of which stem, I think, from a sense of morbid curiosity (as in "how could she possibly wear that with that!"). I've taken the liberty of writing up a blog post to help answer some of these questions in far more detail than I could in normal conversation, given my inability to remember where I have bought certain items.

Important note: click all photos below for a larger image for maximum effect!

My Glasses

Glasses in SL run the gamut from wire-framed glasses which remind people of a maiden aunt to blingtastic designer knockoffs. As the founder of the Girls With Glasses group (want to join? drop me a notecard!), I almost always have mine on so finding a versatile stylish pair was a must. After several unsatisfactory searches, I came across the "Betty" model from Mobius which has the advantage of color changing lenses and frames, making them easy to wear with almost any outfit. Best of all, they're only 50L. Given that I've seen single pairs which run upwards of 300L, the Mobius glasses are a bargain. I've also seen 1950s style glasses at artilleri and Icing which rock if you're aiming for that particular look.

I also have a set of goggles from Eat Rice. Why goggles? Well, why not? I mean, how much time do you spend flying around? Don't you need to keep the wind out of your eyes? What are you, a lizard?

Photo taken aboard the {Plunder} Airship Outpost.

My Jewelry

Some of my jewelry was free from various sources. I have a silver ring and a bracelet that I wear for dressing up but I'm still looking for the perfect pearl choker which doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I don't roll with the bling, so you won't see me in the ol' blinky-blinky which is so popular in SL. My casual jewelry has to be fun, not blinding, and besides, how can you sneak up on someone in the dark with the jewelry equivalent of Rudolph's nose?

I love the detail on the dice from artilleri's "High Roller" necklace and bracelet set (which is being discontinued) which you can see below. The photo was taken at Djorkland Amusements next to the Skee Ball game and I was attacked by Zombies seconds after snapping the picture. My thanks to Donnie Otsuka who dispatched the zombies in a hail of gunfire.

Also beautifully detailed is Gritty Kitty's "Bottle Cap HARBOE" necklace, with the polar bear logo on the bottle cap. The photo below was taken at Koreshan Pointe.

And the lip ring? That came from a random lucky chair, the mysteries of which I will be writing about in a future post. If you see me and want a lip ring, let me know and I will pass one along.

My Belts

Belts are tricky little devils because you need to position them just so for them to work properly and, if you're chubby like me, you will need to stretch them out. The rest of you have to shrink them so they don't look like hula hoops. Below is Gritty Kitty's "Roboto" belt, named such for reasons which should be self evident.

My Collars

Wearing a collar in SL can be a fashion statement, a lifestyle statement, or both. I happen to like the aesthetic of juxtaposing my collars against some of the beautiful retro styles I've found, but if one chooses to wear a collar for fashion you will face some questions and assumptions about you and your interest in BDSM. I often get the question "who owns your collar" to which I reply, "I do." Those who click on the collar get to talk to Mr. Cash's hand. Want to script an SL object? A friend pointed me to a website which allows you to do just that.

The collar below is from Eat Rice and you can modify it to include the texture of your choice on the charm hanging from it. The collar comes in four flavors: with a leash, with a leash and spikes, with spikes and no leash, and no spikes or leash/me so you can choose whichever one suits your mood. There is also a bell which rings, but the creator of the collar removed it at my request. It is currently on sale at Eat Rice.

That's a partial tour of things I like. I'm sure other things will come to me and I know that you know that I will be posting about them. But since it isn't all about me, tell me about you--what are you favorite stores for accessories? Where should I visit to take cool photos? Have you ever been attacked by zombies? Let me know by leaving a comment!

Bridge Out

Dot Lane wonders about the sign at the edge of the bridge.....
Dot Lane suddenly realizes the sign doesn't say anything about a falling hazard.....

When you come across a bridge in SL and have a brand new swan dive animation, what would you do?

Are You Pregnant? Part 2

I've written previously about being asked by folks in SL if I am pregnant. As you can see, despite the shirt, I'm not a good candidate for motherhood, having just lit up my traditional cigarette (I have just one, but look at the size of it!) which always follows the pint of bourbon I need to get me through the SL day. My guess is that I'm also not getting enough folic acid so, as you can see, being pregnant would be irresponsible.

The shirt came from some random lucky chair which proves that serendipity is alive and well in Second Life and the cigarette is a loaner from my friend GL. I'm not sure why I'm smoking it like a spy from a 1940s war movie but remember, smoking isn't cool! Don't smoke kids!

Ahoy!

I have to mention that artilleri, an excellent retro inspired store, is having a sale on items which will soon be discontinued including the bracelet and necklace set you see me wearing in the above photo--it's called "High Roller" and never fails to attract comments. I'm not certain how the designer created all the little dice but I'm glad she did. The sailor suit (the "Dakota" model) is also from artilleri and happily will stay available. You can find out all the details about artilleri, including how to find the sale, at the artilleri store blog.
