Of Mice and Dots

*pop feel* group gift 1

*pop feel* is another store I came across while trekking through Japanese sims and I was immediately impressed by the sense of whimsy evident in many of the clothes they sell. I've had the little mouse dress you see above for some time, but haven't come up with a good reason to blog it. It was a group gift (*pop feel* is very generous) and while I'd never wanted to be a mouse before, this outfit just makes it feel right. Since discovering the store, I've watched for announcements of new clothes and today a notice for the outfit you see in the top photo arrived. "Aha!" I said, thinking that this might the right time to blog about *pop feel*. I ran off to look at the chiffon tunic set and decided the light green was just the thing to put me in the mood for spring, which can't come a moment too soon. Also included with the tunic are the capri jeans I'm wearing, and a dotted bra and skirt. The bra and skirt didn't seem quite to fit the overall look so I'm not wearing them, but, oh, how I love this tunic! It's available in black, orange, green, and pink. You can also see a nice close up in the second photo of the Hanauta "Thank You Kiwi Ring", which provides an excellent match for the tunic.

I still can't get over how cute this Fleur Parfait skin is. I can't even look at myself!

You Know What Else Everybody Likes?

Fleur Skins Boutique Parfait Vanilla 2, ETD "Maaliyah"

Fleur Skins Boutique Parfait Vanilla 2, Truth "Perry"

Fleur Skins Boutique Parfait Vanilla 2, Truth "Perry"

Tete a Pied recently rebranded, with a new name, Fleur Skins, and a new build with an English colonial feel (think somewhere tropical, not the Falkland Islands which would have been a far simpler build--a vast green field filled with sheep would suffice), which replaces the train station which debuted to much fanfare only a few months ago.

I attended the opening party for Fleur last weekend and enjoyed rubbing elbows with all kinds of folks (well, not so much rubbing elbows as having elbows rubbed against my forehead--I didn't realize how tall so many of SL's beautiful people are) while listening to swell music and playing non-gambling roulette for prizes. Given the attention to detail in their work, how could Roslin Petion and CJ Carnot throw anything but a fun party? I left a happy girl.

Then a few days ago, more generosity from the team behind Fleur. Members of the Fleur Skins update group can get a gift card to use in the store simply by going to Fleur and touching the gift card vendor while wearing their group tag. I counted up the other gift cards I had, added in the new one, and realized I could afford one of the new Parfait skins. Now at this point, I have to channel the donkey from Shrek:

"You know what else everybody likes? Parfaits. Have you ever met a person, you say, "Let's get some parfait," they say, "Hell no, I don't like no parfait"? Parfaits are delicious."

Amen to that donkey! Why are Fleur Parfaits so yummy? Well, to start, they're hand drawn, which gives them a different look than the Vivant line. The Parfait are less pure glam, more girl next door. I imagine that Holden Caulfield would like them for the same reason he liked Jane Gallagher, and to me they embody some of the spirit of what the Japanese call wabi-sabi, or finding beauty in imperfection. (Incidentally, I may be the first person on earth to reference Shrek, The Catcher in the Rye, and wabi-sabi in the same paragraph. You have just witnessed history. I hope you are suitably impressed. Don't try this at home.) I chose Fleur Boutique Vanilla Parfait 2, primarily for the freckles, and rushed off to take a few pictures. I'm pleased with the versatility of the skin, which seems to take different styles and colors of hair well. I'm looking forward to more releases in the Boutique line.

The top photo shows the skin with ETD's "Maaliyah" in black, the middle with with Truth's "Maxwell" in auburn. The sweater in the first two pics is from Tres Blah's "Mod Tweed" outfit, the choker from Cipher, and the earrings from M-C-H. The outfit in the final pic is Tres Blah's "Gwen" sweater with pink shirt and dotty tie.

[update: as of 5:00 AM PST on 17 Feb, no more gift cards are being distributed]

The Logo I Came Up With

A few weeks ago I ran into Ivey Deschanel at her store, Sn@tch. Since I'm a punk fan and she had a great selection of band posters on the walls, I struck up a conversation and immediately liked her. When she announced she was having a contest to design a new logo for the store I was thrilled and immediately went to work. The only problem with my enthusiasm is that I have never done any graphic design work. None. Nada. Zilch. I had used GIMP to add an image to a t-shirt template, so I *kind of* had a sense how the program worked.

Still, with my motto "Never let your own incompetence prevent you from trying something" firmly in place, I ventured off to GIMP to translate my vision into reality. I spent about half an hour playing with layers and came up with what you see above. To my surprise, I was a runner-up and won some great clothes, some of which you see above. I'd like to thank Ivey for her encouragement and enthusiasm. And now that I've learned about alpha channels, I'm going to try my hand at making some clothes. Woo hoo for trying new things!

Tell Me Again About The Rabbits.....

Kit gave me the cutest "Sleepy Rabbit" from Happy Mood for Valentine's Day. Isn't Mr. Wiggles adorable? He doesn't say much but I do more than enough talking for the two of us. I'm wearing "Elegant Noir" by GG Couture in Cherry Buttons. Normally I'd say a fur stole would complete this outfit but we don't want to hurt Mr, Wiggles' feelings now do we?

Hearts on Fire

Bossa Nova's "Angelique" Lingerie Set

I found the Candy Heart test at Abby Coalcliff's Devilish Cupcake blog so I thought I would give it a shot in honor of Valentine's Day. As a side note, almost everyday I pass by the former NECCO factory where they made millions of these hearts each year. It's now a biotech company which means the smell of candy being made is no longer present. All is not lost though since the nearby Tootsie Roll factory gives off a heavenly scent.

Your Candy Heart Says "Get Real"

You're a bit of a cynic when it comes to love.
You don't lose your head, and hardly anyone penetrates your heart.

Your ideal Valentine's Day date: is all about the person you're seeing (with no mentions of v-day!)

Your flirting style: honest and even slightly sarcastic

What turns you off: romantic expectations and "greeting card" holidays

Why you're hot: you don't just play hard to get - you are hard to get

New Boots And New Hair!

Tazare Mulligan's "Reflections" Boots

.
.The Abyss' "Aeon" Hair in Blood

I chatted with my friend Sable today after not having talked with her in a while. While catching up on what was happening, she mentioned that she had found some great new boots. Knowing her taste in fetishwear to be impeccable, I quickly ran off using the landmark she provided and there they were, Tazare Mulligan's "Reflections" boots. They're available in two models, thigh boots and knee boots, with the knee boots being a steal at 295L. I'm impressed with the high level of detail work and the laces, straps, and metal all have color change capability via a menu. They're also Lockmeister and XCite ChainAnywhere capable, according to the vendor. I'm not sure exactly what ChainAnywhere means, but I can guess. As a bonus, you get two wrist bracelets with the boots. Tazare Mulligan also sells the "Eiffel" model shoe and boot if you're on a tighter budget. Want to see them in world? Click here to get there! I'm also wearing new hair in this post, the "Aeon" model in blood from The Abyss, which gives me a vaguely Eastern European assassin look, which isn't a bad thing at all.

Is This What Diogenes Used?

Boingo's "Lookin' For Love Helmet"

Another View Of The Helmet

As I was wandering around on the Designers in Seclusion treasure hunt, I ran into several blog readers. I'm really flattered to know you're out there and want to thank you for your kind comments--please say hi or feel free to IM if you find something you think I should be writing about. Another fun part of the hunt was finding new stores--as hard as it may be to believe, I haven't visited every store in SL. One of the best discoveries was Boingo, which gave away the "Lookin' For Love Helmet". As soon as I put it on, I laughed, and I continued to wear it all last night. They have all kinds of gadgets, including a trumpet that has to be heard to be believed. The trumpet promises to be "annoying", and boy does it ever deliver! Can I also tell you how much I love the "I Heart Your Mom" shirt from Thimbles? Because I do, you know.

The Details:

Shirt: Thimbles "I Heart Your Mom" (available for 1L at the Cherry Buttons location)
Pants: CKS Designs "Lovesick"

Hair: ETD "Maaliyah" in raspberry

Skin: Tete a Pied Vivant Blush Paon 4

Lingeriextravaganza!

Total Betty "Valentine"

CKS Designs "Candypants"

CKS Designs "Candypants" rear view

Second Wave Apparel "Peek-a-boo-Frills Hearts"

Valentine's Day brings out new lingerie designs and an excuse to wear them. Girls like me who don't usually wear such pretty underthings need a day of the year to shine, even if our plan is simply to put them on and admire ourself in the mirror since our grand romantic plans have been dashed. Ben and Jerry called me and said no go on the threesome but Jerry did admit they had named a flavor after me--Chunky Monkey. I'm not sure if I should be offended or honored.

I'm modeling CKS Designs' "Cherished" lingerie set in the top photo, which shows off my adorable side (I do so have one!), while Total Betty's gift from the Designers in Seclusion treasure hunt whispers "sultry". Kit gave me the "Candypants" set, which is currently 50% off (50% off? That's like taking, um, candypants from a baby!) It matches up so well with the Philotic Energy "Phaedra" hair that I found yesterday while on the DiS treasure hunt. A little known Dot Lane fact is that my nickname is in fact "Candypants" but Kit made these before I knew her. I think she's psychic sometimes! The last photo is another DiS treasure hunt gift from Second Wave Apparel. The bra and panty set comes in five colors and the other four are decidedly cheerier, but I chose the one shown for most closely matching my Valentine's day mood. On the plus side, 15 Feburary means 75% off Valentine's Day candy at local stores, which is a holiday I can get behind.

The Scorecard:

Lingerie: CKS Designs "Cherished"
Hair: ETD "Maaliyah" in Elika's Red
Skin: Tete a Pied Vivant Blush Pin-Up1

Lingerie: Total Betty "Valentine" from the Designers in Seclusion hunt

A Sneak Preview Of One Of The CKS Designs Gift....

Since You Know What You're Getting For Valentine's Day.....

......The Question Becomes What Are You Getting Us?

Kit, CC, and Dot are modelling "Wrapped" from CKS Designs. I'm not sure if it's the champagne tickling my bum or CC, but I certainly feel giddy sitting in a champagne glass. Kit and CC aren't sure what they want for Valentine's Day. I want world peace and shoe box full of Lindens.

Valentine's Day fast approaches which means love is in the air all over SL. Me? I'm planning a threesome for Valentine's Day and I can't wait, but first I want to show you all a few things which I've picked up recently. In the top photo, I'm wearing a "Swing" sweater in eggplant from CKS Designs, a new color which can be combined with the "Swing" shorts and stockings released a few months ago or worn alone. Kit has done a nice job of shading on the sweater to enhance my bust (much better than the kleenex I usually use) and the fit just says "sexy". It is also available in other colors--a light blue, mint, pink which will get you thinking of springtime, when a young noob's mind turns to thoughts of love. I've combined the sweater with an a-line skirt from WRONG's "Look 6" outfit. I can't say enough about the skirt, which is sexy and versatile and perfect for me. I also have on stockings from *pop feel*, which were given out as Valentine gift 2 to the *pop feel* group. They're light grey with horizontal ribbing and a have a circle of silver hearts around the top to hold them in place.

The second and third photos show the "Jersey Girl" thermal from Sn@tch. In the fourth photo you see me in the undies which come with the thermal. I found these just in time because I had been frantically tearing through my wardrobe trying to find panties which would let me show off the "My Cherry Valentine" tattoo from Alexitimia Tattoos. Valle Giulia does beautiful original tattoo work so I'm happy to have this little piece to call my own. I didn't have clothes which showed enough of the tattoo to get a good shot of it and I wasn't going to photograph myself naked so when I put on the Sn@tch undies I breathed a sigh of relief.

The final three photos show off the "Love Letter" locket from Coquette which was given out as part of the Fashion Consolidated rez day celebration. I've long championed my Eat Rice! collar which has a charm to which the owner can add an image. I have several copies of the collar, each with a different image but the one I wear most has an image which says "fuck off"--I'm classy like that. "Love Letter" goes one better by letting the wearer add two photos to the locket, which opens and closes when it is touched. You'll notice I have two pictures in it, my friends CC and Kit. They have matching lockets with my photo. Remember that I said I had a threesome planned for Valentine's Day? I'm such a lucky girl! I just wish SL would let all three of us partner each other......

I Love You Ben and Jerry!

.......Ha! Fooled you! My threesome isn't with CC and Kit--it's with Ben and Jerry! Nothing makes a single girl feel better on Valentine's Day than ice cream so that's my plan--a pint of Chubby Hubby, a pint of bourbon, and waiting by the phone.....

Misc notes: Hair is either Truth's "Missy" or ETD's "Maaliyah", skin is Tete a Pied Vivant Blush Paon 4, glasses are "Betty" by Mobius.

What Is The Sound Of One Dot Writing?

There Are Responsible Girl Reporters.....
(as with all photos on my blog, click to enlarge--my photos are Xcite! enabled)

In theory, this should be the first post of mine to hit I Heart SL : Fashion. Since this means many of you will be meeting me for the first time, let me say "Hi, I'm Dot Lane and this is my blog". I do feel compelled to write a little more about myself and the philosophy behind my blog however. (I heard you groan! Admit it!) Now I know what my loyal readers are saying. They're saying, "But Dot, we already know the philosophy behind your blog. Your philosophy is that a car wreck attracts rubberneckers." Au contraire! You have my philosophy mistaken for that of Britney Spears. And though I sometimes appear without hair after a particularly bad teleport and forget my panties on occasion, she is not the role model for my blog.

......And Then There Is Dot Lane, Ready To Blog!

So what is this blog and why do I write it? Second part first: I write the blog because I enjoy it. "What is this blog?" requires a longer explanation. I started this blog to write about myself, primarily because I have a notoriously bad memory for places I've been and things I've seen. Once I became comfortable in SL I started taking pictures of myself and realized that I should be keeping notes or at least tagging my pictures. I checked out Flickr but decided I wanted to write more than brief descriptions. And since I wasn't hanging out naked in sex clubs, I also thought I should write about the clothes I wore as well as the places I visited. The primary focus of the blog soon became clothes, which I've tried to combine, when possible, with observations about the occasional absurdities of SL and about SL in general. In other words, clothes and fashion and style enable me to write about other issues, so I suppose I'm operating under the "Mary Poppins" philosophy, although I like to think you get more sugar than medicine when you read my blog.

Important point number one: I'm not a reviewer of clothes. I don't solicit clothes for review nor do I write about things I wouldn't wear myself. This makes me an enthusiast, not a reviewer. A reviewer has a particular set of responsibilities. I, on the other hand, have no responsibilities. For the most part I am enthusiastic about clothes and design and why wouldn't I be? I buy the clothes I wear. This leads me to another point: transparency. I had a long conversation about clothes with a friend a few days ago and she said something like "but it is easy for you to look good--don't people give you the clothes you write about?" I felt my heart sink a little, because her statement meant that I haven't made it clear that I do in fact purchase most of the things I wear and that yes, I do actually go out and try to earn money to support my clothing purchases.

A Bribe? Umm...What Gave You That Idea? Have I Mentioned I Love CKS Designs?

Important point number two: Have I been given clothes in the past by store owners? Yes. It sometimes happens, especially after I've written a review of a store. If the review is a particularly long or thorough one, I'll send a link to the store owner on the theory that people like to see their work being appreciated. (Content creators are also very good about Googling themselves however!) After I do this I sometimes receive a gift back. I certainly appreciate the gesture it but it also make me feel a little self-conscious and I'm not sure what to say about the practice other than that it does happen.

I also have friends who are designers which is another reason why I hate to say that I write reviews about clothes--the line between advertising and editorial is completely obliterated when I blog about their work. And while I'm not going to publicize my friends list here, you can rest assured that you'll know when I'm talking about the work of someone who is a friend or acquaintance--I get all gushy. Like everyone else, I also have my favorite designers who will appear time and time again in this blog. I make no apologies about my love for Kit Maitland's CKS Designs (she's also a friend), my passion for Tete a Pied (now Fleur Skins) and Ingenue and Bossa Nova as well as all of the funky Japanese design I've found, especially places like Cipher and Kiki's Closet. Reviewers strive for objectivity and I find, too often, objectivity going out the window when I write about these designers and a host of others.

My final concern about joining a fashion blog feed is that I sometimes veer far far away from fashion in some of my posts. I'm the kind of person who would feel guilty if a reader came to a fashion feed expecting pretty pictures and instead found my rantings about IM conversations or my self-aggrandizing posts (forgetting for a moment that the blog is entirely self-aggrandizing--humor me here) about Google searches. All I can do is promise to try to keep a high signal to noise ratio so you don't tune me out.

So now you're saying, "Good lord girl, don't get all emo on us--we don't even know you!" Fair enough. But writing is my RL work and these are issues I have wrestled with at length so it is inevitable that they bleed over into SL. On a brighter note, if you're interested in my blog and want to know more, there is an archive of over 100 posts waiting for you. So go and read, or better yet, get out into SL to explore and have fun! If you see me around be sure to say hello or leave a comment at the blog. I love to chat.

Tres Blah "Juju" High Waist Jeans, rear view

As I've written previously, Tres Blah was one of the first stores I discovered when the initial shock of SL wore off and I realized I needed to upgrade my wardrobe. I'm pleased that new designs have arrived at Tres Blah and that Julliette Westerburg's talent for making lovely clothes at reasonable prices shows no sign of abating.

Why do I like Tres Blah? First, I'm drawn to the hand drawn and colored aesthetic. The top photo illustrates this: the sweater looks as if it has been done in watercolor, allowing the color gradations to mimic a heathered grey in a way that hyper-realistic textures often can't. Second, Tres Blah gives good value. I appreciate having the plain sweater, the sweater/shirt/tie, the shirt/tie, and sweater/shirt available as options. In the second photo I've combined the shirt/tie with the "Novembre" tuxedo from Tete a Pied. Now I know what you're saying. You're saying "But Dot, you don't wear a shirt and tie like that with a tuxedo jacket". First, thank you Miss Manners. Second, I do, and I look damn good doing it.

The final two photos show the "Juju" high waist jeans. Given the prevalence of low-rise and no-rise (you think I'm joking? look around and you'll see some!) jeans in the market, a pair of high waist jeans seems like an anachronism especially since most high waisted jeans are so unstylish. The faded "Juju" jeans manage to combine a well done abraded texture with a flattering ass (none of that back seem disappearing into your ass), interesting pocket detail, and a well done flared leg. How high waisted are these? They cover my tattoos and the waistband rests just below my belly button. You'll see me wearing these a lot.
